KoalaCue Companion Support

KoalaCue Companion for iPhone and iPad is a remote surface for the KoalaCue app running on your Mac. It requires KoalaCue for macOS on the same local network and is not a standalone lighting-console app — on its own it cannot design lighting, patch a rig, run fades or replace ETC Eos.

Requirements

  • iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 16 or later.
  • A Mac and the iPhone or iPad on the same local Wi-Fi network or LAN, able to reach each other directly.
  • KoalaCue for macOS installed, with your show open and Companion enabled.
  • Local Network permission granted to the Companion app on the iPhone or iPad the first time it asks.

Pairing the Companion app

  1. Open your show in KoalaCue for macOS.
  2. In KoalaCue Settings on the Mac, enable Companion.
  3. Launch KoalaCue Companion on your iPhone or iPad and allow Local Network access when prompted.
  4. Choose your Mac from the list of discovered machines.
  5. Enter or confirm the pairing code shown by KoalaCue on the Mac. Once accepted, the pairing is remembered on the device.

Troubleshooting

The Mac does not appear in the list

Confirm the show is open on the Mac and Companion is enabled in KoalaCue Settings. Both devices must be on the same network — not one on Wi-Fi and the other on a different subnet or cellular.

Local Network permission was declined

Discovery cannot work without it. On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Local Network and enable KoalaCue Companion, then relaunch the app.

A VPN is active

VPN clients often route or block local traffic. Disconnect the VPN on the iPhone, iPad and Mac while using Companion.

Guest Wi-Fi or client isolation

Guest networks and many venue or hotel networks isolate clients from each other, so the devices can reach the internet but not one another. Use a production network you control, or a dedicated router or direct hotspot for the Mac and the iPad.

Firewall blocking the connection

On the Mac, check System Settings → Network → Firewall and allow incoming connections for KoalaCue. Third-party firewall or security tools may also need a rule for it.

Version mismatch

Companion and KoalaCue for macOS must be compatible releases. If the app reports a mismatch, update KoalaCue on the Mac (updates are installed inside the app) and update Companion from the App Store, then reconnect.

Notes for App Review

KoalaCue Companion is a companion client with a hard dependency: it discovers and connects to the KoalaCue for macOS app over the reviewer's local network. Without a Mac running KoalaCue with Companion enabled on the same network, the app can only show its discovery and pairing screens — this is expected behaviour, not a defect.

A reviewer-ready environment (Mac build, demo show and pairing instructions) is provided privately through App Store Connect review notes rather than published here, so no credentials or pairing codes are exposed on this page.

Report a fault
